Abstract

Accurate bioprocess models are essential to significantly reduce experimental trial and error and to construct robust optimisation and control strategies (Theodoropoulos and Sun (2019)). Here we present a novel continuous bioreactor with immobilised cells in a packed-bed formation for the efficient bioproduction of succinic acid. We test the predictive capabilities of our model and we use it in an optimal MPC formulation employing a 2-step model reduction process to address the inherent complexity and large-scale characteristics of our model for real-time applications.
