Abstract

Low-frequency oscillation modes of electromechanical origin, when they have low damping rates, can affect the stability of power systems. The identification of these electromechanical modes is essential to preserve the continuous and safe operation of power systems. This paper proposes a multistage algorithm to determine the electromechanical modes of signals collected by Phasor Measurement Units (PMUs) in power systems. The proposed algorithm is composed of four processes and at each stage an electromechanical mode is estimated and evaluated. Case studies of a real PMU signal were conducted and discussed.
